11 of the most talented Calgary tattoo artists to get inked by

To say that tattoos have grown in popularity over the past decade would be a massive understatement.

It seems to be more common these days to find someone with 10 tattoos than someone with none, and much of it is largely due to the influence of social media.

Tattoo artists and their work can now be easily viewed on Instagram. This has sparked an explosion in the discovery of the work of tattoo artists.

Calgary has some of the best tattoo artists you can find (if the studios aren’t pandemic shutdown) no matter what style you’re looking for. Spring and summer are just around the corner and are a great opportunity to show off some fresh ink.

Here are 11 talented YYC tattoo artists whose work you need to check out.

Alix Au

The old crow tattoo parlor

Alix Au is relatively fresh to the tattoo game with six years of experience, but she is already delivering some of the best and most creative blackwork in Calgary.

Au manages to pop all of her black tattoos with a gritty, dynamic energy. Whether you are looking for solid black, shaded, textured, or even trash polka style, Alix Au is the artist to consult.

Rick wilson

Kensho tattoo

Rick Wilson is perhaps the best artist in YYC for a Japanese style tattoo or horimono. Horimono are the images and carvings engraved on the blade of a Japanese sword. The word also refers to tattooing in Japan which usually involves covering the entire body in this traditional style.

Of course, you don’t have to get a full body part (though you could.)

Dan Cameron

Ambassador tattoo

Dan Cameron has been tattooing for over fifteen years and in that time has grown incredible in the style he loves. Cameron is a great artist for any project, but it’s his clean lines and great work that sets him apart from the rest.

His massive and beautiful tattoos – in color and black and white – are a common sight on his Instagram page. He’s created some of the most inventive and gorgeous large format work in town, which makes it a great go-to place for back pieces, sleeves, and everything in between.

Al Morissette

Wild Rose Tattoo Company

Different tattoo styles are growing in popularity, but Morissette keeps things classic. It offers some color, but black is often its preferred ink. His tattoos all look incredibly delicate and detailed from using a single needle gun.

Not to be confused with stick-and-poke work. Morissette uses a single fine electric needle to create the most precise lines. He simply takes previous tattoo philosophies and elevates them to something unique and beautiful.

Address: 815 1st Street SW, Calgary

Joel Mijker

Wild Rose Tattoo Company

American traditional tattooing is an extremely recognizable style. It features smooth lines and bold blacks with other supportive colors like red, yellow, and green. It’s the Sailor Jerry style of tattooing that uses eagles, ships, skulls, and the like frequently.

Joel Mijker’s style uses these principles, adding his own originality and vision, to create bold, unique tattoos that will appeal to fans of traditional tattoos and neoclassicals.

After a tattoo tour through Canada, Kendall now works at the Canadian legacy shop Smilin ‘Buddha, which was founded by the tattoo icon Paul Jeffries.

Kendall has a careful eye and tattoos often freehand and organically. Her style often consists of x-ray botany, flowers and foliage that seem to dissolve into ethereal transparent smoke that wraps around the curve of the body.

Jonathan Huynh

Skull and lotus tattoo

Huynh is one of the best artists in YYC when it comes to tattooing images of manga and anime content. He’s worked on entire sleeves dedicated to his customers’ favorite stories, as well as small frames from cult scenes.

The animated characters of Japanese pop culture seem to be disappearing from the screen, and Huynh manages to capture not only their resemblance but also their energy.

Marigold Santos

Marigold Santos is an all-round artist. She has worked and taught in several major Canadian cities, sharing her unique style through both tattoos and art installations.

Santos immigrated to Canada from the Philippines and her tattoos reflect that experience. She creates black, brush-like art on her clients’ skin, often with images that represent her cultural identity.

Her nontraditional designs have made her an extremely sought-after artist in Canada and beyond.
