Failure to provide specified vital necessities in the event of abuse
CALGARY – NEWS – A shocking story from Calgary today. On Saturday, October 24, 2020, the victim, a 27-year-old male, was found unresponsive in his bedroom by his parents in their Falconridge home.
The man was taken to hospital by EMS, where he was admitted in acute medical emergency due to parental neglect. He weighed only 43 pounds.
“The victim had an illness and was completely dependent on his parents for all of his basic needs,” said Staff Sergeant Vincent Hancott of the Domestic Disputes Division of the Calgary Police Service. “It is believed that his parents failed to provide him with the necessary care and got so far that his life was in danger.”
“It was the actions of a front line health worker that brought this situation to our attention,” continued Staff Sergeant Hancott. “This is a very serious situation and we encourage that person to identify the signs of neglect and contact the police.”
The victim is currently recovering in a long-term care facility.
On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, Jonathon GRUNEWALD, 52, and Malinda PHILLIPS, 47, were charged with counting for livelihood failure and negligence resulting in bodily harm. You will appear in court on Thursday, February 4th, 2021.

However, caregivers continue to have an obligation to ensure the proper care of those who depend on them for their safety and wellbeing.
