Pop-up cinema popup returning to Calgary this summer

If you choose to attend events outside of your home, adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including appropriate physical distancing, wearing masks, and frequent hand washing, as recommended by health officials. If you are sick, please stay home.

Good news, Calgary. The TELUS Spark Science Center has announced that they will be partnering with Big Art again this summer to bring back their drive-in film franchise.

If you were lucky enough to see this event last year, you already know how fun it is. If not, you will get a second chance.

This is how it works. Pre-purchase tickets online for the show of your choice and then go to TELUS Spark at your specified event time. Moviegoers are allowed to enter the venue up to an hour before the film begins, and parking spaces are allocated based on availability.

There are three LED video screens to make sure everyone has a good view. However, as the TELUS Spark parking lot is fairly flat, it is recommended that spectators arrive early to find a better spot.

Film audio is streamed directly into your vehicle via FM radio. Snacks and drinks can even be bought on site. The ushers take orders and bring treats straight to your car.

According to Big Art’s website, the Calgary venue is open Tuesday through Sunday throughout the summer. The first demonstration could take place on June 3rd. Films usually start at 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

Admission prices haven’t risen yet, but a ticket is good for a vehicle with up to five people.

Of course, like everything else these days, drive-in events will be tied to current public health measures. “Depending on AHS regulations, you can relax on the big screen this summer!” TELUS Spark said in an Instagram post.

It sounds like Big Art also has some tricks up its sleeve to enhance the regular drive-in movie experience. “With special effects, large-format concert sound and lighting, and live-action actors, we offer an interactive cinema experience that has never been seen before in Calgary,” the website says.

No movie lineup has been announced yet, but TELUS Spark assured Calgarians on Instagram that they will keep us updated as soon as they know more.
