The city encourages Calgarians to buy local to support Calgary business owners

CALGARY – The City of Calgary has launched a campaign to support local business owners ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The #BuyLocalYYC initiative offers businesses free social media and digital marketing strategies and printable posters for shop doors.

The city is a reminder to the Calgarians of the impact today’s purchases will have on the future success and growth of Calgary businesses and the entire Calgary economy.

“The best way to support Calgary’s economy is to support local businesses and we have so many amazing ones,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said in a statement released Monday. “Calgary is full of hardworking entrepreneurs who pour their hearts into our city.”

“We work hard to make Calgary the best place to start and grow a business – and you can help too. Let’s show our support and #buylocalyyc.”

Calgarians are encouraged to purchase the local Yyc hashtag to help spread the word about their favorite stores.

“Calgarians who support Calgarians are especially important during difficult times,” said Annie MacInnis, executive director of the Kensington Business Improvement Area. “When you shop at Calgary businesses, you are helping your community and reinvesting in our local economy. We’re all in it together.”

The City of Calgary has also made Calgary’s Comeback, a website that lists its plans to support citizens, communities and businesses in times of economic turmoil.
