The YMCA in downtown Calgary is closing its doorways completely

The gray family Eau Claire YMCA will not resume operations if YMCA Calgary is cleared for reopening by provincial health authorities.

The facility will be closed for good after more than 30 years in the community.

The YMCA’s Calgary Eau Claire facility experienced rising costs, declining membership, large capital requirements, and other downtown barriers for several years prior to the pandemic.

“Our experience with COVID-19 has amplified these effects,” the YMCA said in a statement. “But the challenges existed long before the pandemic hit.”

Current members and participants in Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA activities can contact the facility to answer their questions, including information on how to stay with the YMCA using the citywide membership model.

The Eau Claire YMCA Gray Family will be communicating directly with families who have access to their childcare in this location to help them with this transition. The facility’s day-care center will remain open until April 30th.

As for the building itself? The YMCA will continue a deliberate process with experts to determine what will happen to the space.

Fitness lovers in downtown Calgary need to find new ways to stay active – if they haven’t already due to the temporary closure of the pandemic.
